I used to be Chris's customer and a couple of times I relied on him fixing the boiler at my property, where tenants were living. He used to charge £60 for a call on Sundays/bank holiday, plus reasonable charge for parts, labour, VAT, etc. I called him a few weeks ago, on a Sunday, and without giving me any warning, or mentioning a possible increase in price, he reassured me that he'd go and fix the problem with the tenants, as he'd done before. The tenants informed me that Chris went to the house, and left within 15 minutes, after changing a broken valve (small piece of plastic that he already had in his van, didn't even have to order it) Then the surprise: a few days later he sent me an invoice, with a charge of £350!!! I was totally in dismay, and when I looked at the invoice price breakdown, I saw that he charge £200 for "out of hours call", then £80 for the parts and then £50 VAT. After asking if I could pay in two instalments, due to the unexpected high bill, he refused and threatened me that if I wouldn't pay within two days the full invoice, he would forward the case to a debt collection company.

I was very disappointed to receive this negative review. The work actually took more than an hour to complete and not 15 minutes as stated. I take great pride in my work and I find it upsetting to receive feedback like this. I think, unfortunately, the problem has arisen from a miscommunication on both sides. I had a call from … on a Sunday asking for me to go to one of her rental properties as an emergency as they had a problem with the boiler and had no hot water. She asked me to fix the problem if possible and send her the invoice for the work as usual. I was not working that weekend, but I went out to the property as an ‘emergency’ job. Once I had assessed the boiler I found that it had a broken part that needed to be replaced. I carry a lot of stock in my van, as a convenience to customers, so I could fix the problem in one visit, without wasting time ordering parts and scheduling in a new visit. I sent my invoice to … which included my Sunday call out fee, my cost for the part, and my labour charges. I asked her to pay the invoice and explained that the higher fees were due to an emergency call out on a Sunday (fees which are in line with many other tradesmen). She emailed again to say she was still very cross but would have to pay the invoice in instalments- to which I replied that I was unable to offer this service. At the end of the email I did say that I would have to contact the debt collectors if she did not pay. The invoice has been paid.

After our new washing machine was installed, testing showed the outfall pipe was partially blocked and Chris was recommended. He solved the problem and recommended that we should use liquid rather than powder detergents to reduce the chance of a recurrence.

We also needed a new kitchen sink mixer tap. Chris suggested some brands and sourced our choice. As he packing up to leave he noticed a tell-tale drip on the kitchen paper he had left under the sink - at a junction with the existing pipework. So he dismantled it, went to his workshop in the van and came back with a new assembly which does not leak.

I have never before seen such a well-stocked, well-equipped and tidy workshop in anybody’s van. There can’t be many times when he has to go seek materials halfway through a job - to his benefit - and the benefit of all his customers.

Chris undertook a challenging kitchen refit for us. He gave us a clear cost range for the work, which he stuck within so there were no surprises from a budget perspective. Chris also took care of sourcing the kitchen and project managed the whole refit in addition to carrying out a lot of the work himself. He was clear in updating us on progress and highly flexible in adding extra scope to the job. He has outstanding attention to detail and is a perfectionist in his workmanship. We are delighted with our new kitchen and would not hesitate to highly recommend Chris.

We got Chris's details from The Little Green Book Directory and it's a relief to find such a good, reliable tradesman. He was professional in every way: making appointments and sticking to them, responding quickly and honestly to queries, doing an excellent job, leaving everything clean and tidy. We knew that a bending radiator for a bay window had to be done with absolute accuracy but Chris confidently made the template himself and the radiator fits perfectly. We are very happy with the result and will definitely use him again.
